Transference refers to the transfer of emotions, beliefs, and other attachment issues from a significant person in your life to your psychotherapist. The idea is that by working through your feelings for the therapist, who is in psychoanalytic theory suppose to be neutral, you can better understand your relationship and unconscious material directed toward the original person.
Displacement refers to a relplacement of the actual person, in a dream for example, whom you can direct emotions toward withought the associated anxiety. In other words, if you are angry at mom, you can dream about an anonymous woman and express your anger without disturbing or even touching on the positive emotions toward mom. You get to express feelings without actually feeling the anxiety.
Transference and Displacement, as well as the defense mechanisms can be quite complex and can be interpretted slightly differently from dofferent people. I hope this at least helps in your search for an answer.
