Hi Jim, I'm still struggling with the essay. You seem to be working from the same references as me. Maybe you are also from uwe? If not i'm glad we aren't the only ones with a crap library!

I'm planning to include stuff about Weiss' thing on social provisions. A useful article about this is:

DiTommaso, E. and Spinner, B. (1997) Social and emotional loneliness: A re-examination of Weiss' typology of loneliness in Personality and Individual Differences vol.22 pg417-427

It's a bit like attachment theory - we need provisions provided by a social support network - therefore loneliness is about a lack of these things - rather than disliking our own company.

I was also going to include stuff on coping strategies. The article you've got says about spending time in solitude as a way of coping with loneliness, which may suggest that loneliness is about disliking ones own company, since getting over it involves an effort to improve solitude.

I haven't found any arguements against weiss' theory, and can't think of any other things which relate to the question. Maybe you have? Any thoughts would be appreciated, Ange.
