Goals of Statistics

Two ultimate goals of statistics

1. Describe what is happening now
   • DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
     • Requiring the testing of all subjects (the population)
2. Determine what is probably happening or what might happen in the future
   • INFERENTIAL STATISTICS
     • Requires only a sample of the subjects (only a portion of the population)
