Chapter Conclusion

While the majority of the research studies published in professional journals are quantitative in nature, other types of research hold an important place in the gathering and understanding of information.  These non-quantitative studies, while they may include some numerical data, often help provide more color, understanding, and personalization to information that might otherwise be missed.  Historical research helps us understand what has occurred in the past so that we can change the present and future.  Developmental research helps us to understand maturation and natural development in order to better assess the needs of people at various stages of life.  Qualitative research helps us to add individuality and to explain phenomena that are not easily quantified.  Any of these types of research can also be used to gather information that may later lead to a quantitative exploration of data.
